"Arriving to MDSCC" - This morning (notice the date), my brother and I have gone from Zarzalejo to MDSCC (Madrid Deep Space Communication Complex), a rout of 30 Km round trip. In the photo you can see my brother and the DSS-63 antenna (called 'the big one'), built in 1974 as a 64-meter antenna, and upgraded to 70 metres in the late 1980s. It can transmit in S and X-band with a power up to 400 kilowatts and receive in L, S, and X bands. DSS-63 weighs a total of 8000 tons, whereby the dish has a weight of 3500 tons. Its reflecting surface is 4180 m2.
Both my brother and I worked there; I did for 17 years (until 1985) and my brother for 33, and he was the Complex Director during 19 until he retired in 1999. If you would like to know something more about MDSCC, this is the web site http://www.mdscc.org/ .
